Maritime and Naval Drone Filming and Photography

Specialist aerial and ground filming for ports, maritime operations, shipping lines, naval and marine engineering clients - planned around tides, vessel movements and port permissions.

    Discuss your project

We specialise in filming and photographing maritime operations. Vessels move, tides set the timetable, and every flight needs the right permissions from the port or harbour authority. We've worked in that environment for years, from Royal Navy documentaries to maiden calls, crane moves and heavy-lift cargo at ports in the UK and abroad.

We're based in Portsmouth, on the Solent, and work at ports and harbours across the UK and overseas.

    How we work at sea

Drone operator with a drone aboard a vessel in Southampton

    Permissions handled

We work with port and harbour authorities on every job, and have filmed five cruise ships from 1,000ft using enhanced permissions.

    Land, water and air

We film from quaysides, RIBs, pilot boats and the vessels themselves, including launching and catching drones by hand aboard yachts.

    Vessel tracking

Smooth tracking of moving vessels, from tugs to a 369-metre container ship.

    More than one angle

Dual-drone operations and ground crews mean one movement can be covered from several positions at once.

    Day and night

From pre-dawn starts to night-time lifts and low-light stills of cruise ships leaving port.

    Secure sites

We regularly work on naval bases and MOD sites, with DBS-checked crew.

    Maritime
    Brett Group
"Sara and the team at Solent Sky Services delivered an excellent service for us aboard the Britannia Beaver ahead of our internal roadshows. Working to a tight and changeable turnaround, dependent on the ship’s schedule, they were professional, organised and adaptable throughout. The team spent 24 hours on board capturing high-quality drone footage of the vessel sailing, along with additional interviews with crew members that have given us valuable content we can continue to use across our website and communications. The finished content was exactly what we needed for our annual event and played an important role in helping us communicate key messages for employees. Sarah and the team were easy to work with from start to finish, and their experience and attention to detail really showed in the final result. We would definitely work with them again."

Stills that work as hard as the film. We photograph vessel arrivals and departures, port and terminal operations, heavy lifts, infrastructure progress and naval movements, from the air and on the ground. Images are edited and delivered ready for websites, press, reports, tenders and social media, and can be captured on the same day as filming.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Most of our work is over water, in ports or alongside vessels. We plan every flight around the vessel's movements, the tide and the port's operations, and agree positions with the people running the operation.

Yes. Maritime photography is a core part of what we do. We can capture stills alongside filming on the same visit, or as a standalone shoot, from the air and on the ground.

Yes. We've produced Royal Navy documentary work for five consecutive years, including filming alongside HRH Princess Anne and a six-month documentary following physical training recruits, and regularly film on naval bases and MOD sites. Our crew is DBS checked.

It depends on the port, the location and the airspace. We handle the permissions as part of the job, working with the port or harbour authority, and tell you the lead time when we quote. Some ports need more notice than others, so the earlier we know, the better.

Yes. We regularly film from RIBs, pilot boats and the vessels themselves, and can launch and recover drones from a moving deck. If you don't have a boat available, we can arrange one.

We know schedules slip with weather, tides and port operations. We'll agree how to hold dates with you when you book, and keep in touch with the operation as the day gets closer.

Yes. We've captured night-time heavy lifts and low-light stills of cruise ships arriving and departing, subject to the port's permissions.

It depends on the location, the crew and vessels needed, the permissions and the editing. Tell us about the project and we'll send a plan and quote within 24 hours.
