A unique commercial/government and US/UK naval collaboration saw us documenting in-port and at-sea exercises between a US-owned commercial vessel and a UK Navy ship. This job was an enormous undertaking, and our first time working on a maritime project involving refuelling at sea! After completing the in-port filming in Portland, UK, we discovered the at-sea portion would take place in Malaga, Spain, so we quickly arranged for our crew to head out and capture that, too.

    Pre-Production

The brief called for candid still photographs of crew performing the mission, time-lapse video documenting the side-by-side exercises both in-port and at-sea, and aerial drone photographs and video of the two ships conducting their respective exercises. We planned for safe drone operations from a moving vessel, and on a tanker, across two locations in two countries.

    SHOOT

    Production

We captured time-lapse video of the refuelling operations, professional photography documenting the entire collaboration, drone aerials of the ships working side by side, and direct-to-camera interview-style segments with crew members, all across four days in Portland and Malaga.

    POST

    Post-Production

The result: a polished two-minute highlights edit, an extended cut featuring the interview segments, ready-for-social time-lapse footage, and a full set of professional stills! The client was over the moon with the deliverables. They've since returned to Solent Sky Services for additional video production projects, and told us that our videos have helped define their brand.
