Multi-Episode Maritime Documentary Production for Vortexa
Behind the scenes of energy transportation: A multi-episode documentary series

Pre-Production
With just three days' notice, we coordinated travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, and arranged all necessary permissions for maritime filming. This included drone flight authorizations, vessel access clearances, and risk assessments for working aboard an operational energy tanker.
We developed a shot list balancing documentary storytelling with Vortexa's campaign objectives, while preparing equipment for challenging maritime conditions including sea spray, limited power access, and confined filming spaces.
Production
The production phase began with Mike's solo travel to Edinburgh and drone cinematography at The Kelpies before joining the crew of the Superiority. He stayed overnight aboard the operational tanker, moored beside an island allegedly owned by the Grand Theft Auto creator, conducting comprehensive interviews with crew members about life at sea.
Working solo in challenging maritime conditions, Mike captured drone footage, documented daily operations, and gathered authentic behind-the-scenes content while navigating safety protocols and the constraints of filming aboard a working vessel.
Post-Production
- Edited cinematic trailer and three documentary episodes (7-9 minutes each)
- Professional color grading for consistent cinematic look
- Sound design, mixing, and audio enhancement
- Implementation of client's motion graphics
- Integration of Vortexa platform footage and data visualisations
- Multiple revision rounds with client feedback
- Final delivery optimised for interactive digital campaign presentation
- Content launched for Vortexa Innovation Week and Gastech 2023
This project took us to Scotland to document life aboard the energy tanker Superiority for Vortexa's Energy Stories campaign. We captured drone footage at iconic locations like The Kelpies and Port Edgar Marina before joining the crew for an overnight stay on the vessel, moored beside an island allegedly owned by the Grand Theft Auto creator.
Through extensive interviews and cinematography, we documented authentic crew experiences at sea, then spent four months in post-production creating a cinematic trailer and three-episode series that became central elements of Vortexa's impressive interactive digital campaign presentation.
