The Solent forts are some of our favourite places to film. Surrounded by open water between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, Spitbank Fort and No Man’s Fort combine historic architecture with a setting that’s difficult to appreciate fully from the shore.

For a film and photography team based on the south coast, they’re particularly rewarding subjects. From a distance, you see their distinctive outlines against the water. Closer views reveal the details: the walls, the rooftop structures and the contrast between the buildings and the sea around them.

Our film takes you on a tour of Spitbank Fort and No Man’s Fort, sharing a closer look at these familiar Solent landmarks.

A different perspective on the Solent

Aerial filming helps put the forts into context. Their position offshore is as much a part of their character as the architecture itself, and a wider view shows the relationship between the buildings, the surrounding water and the coastline.

That combination is what makes them such enjoyable subjects to shoot. There’s a story in the setting before anyone has said a word.
